The story of Kosciuszko Wines
Love of Flinders Ranges Shiraz, Clare and Eden Valley Rieslings and Cabernet Sauvignon from home state South Australia encouraged Chris to complete post graduate oenology studies at Adelaide University. Vintages in cooler areas of California and 2004 vintage experience in Tumbarumba, NSW lead to our decision to pursue something different from producing mainstream, warm climate, big Australian reds.
Tumbarumba vignerons have grown brilliant fruit for over 25 years exploiting the high altitude and cool climate, but have produced locally only a few premium wine labels branding “Tumbarumba”. Most of the Region’s fruit is developed into premium sparkling and icon table wines by the large winemaking corporations far away from Tumbarumba. However, in recognition of quality, “Tumbarumba” appellation is now beginning to be acknowledged on more wine labels.
We are eager to craft classic Pinot Noir, as well as elegant expressions of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and other varieties from cool elevated vineyards. With support from several local grape-growers we now operate a winery with a label that reflects the characteristics of this unique appellation.
Our Tumbarumba wines are produced in the foothills adjacent to Koscuiszko National Park; within sight of Mt Kosciuszko. “KOSCIUSKO” (old anglicised spelling) was originally chosen as a brand to reflect the seriousness and elegance of our wines whilst projecting a high altitude - cool climate statement about the Tumbarumba appellation. The recent change to "KOSCIUSZKO and the inclusion of the stylised “Z” (slalom) respects the proper Polish spelling now accepted by the NSW Board of Geographic Names.
We hope you enjoy our wines, relishing the result of cool days and cold nights that are characteristic of the ripening cycle for premium fruit here in Tumbarumba.
